Presented to us in "real time" while the hour-and-a-half-long film counts down the final 90 minutes before "Saturday Night Live" (then called “Saturday Night”) was broadcast live. We are invited to witness and go behind the scenes as we step into the chaos of the magical Hollywood version of the beginning of this legendary television show. Longtime SNL fans will be happy to see the many, many references to SNL' the most famous and beloved sketches, most of which would not have been available and ready before this first performance. The pacing and action are frenzied disaster after disaster as the hundreds of tiny cogs required to pull off something like SNL try to piece together some form that works and produce a show that works so far, where the curtain goes up. The actors cast to mimic the first cast are there and do a great job of embodying some truly huge shoes to fill.
This movie is a fun nostalgic fantasy tribute
They are extremely fun to watch and carry most of the film with humor. But I’m afraid Lorne Michaels is misspelled or poorly written because our main focus in this vortex of frustratingly incompetent administration has largely become amateurish and annoyingly stupid as we continue to wait and wait and wait for an opportunity and it never really does. He can barely convey his vision of the show in light human terms and wanders from fire to fire, never putting one out and promptly forgetting them as he moves on to the next. When the first show was pulled, it was largely because everyone else went on without it and made it work regardless. I also irrationally hate his face and that little look he gets when something goes wrong; like an overtired, angry toddler sniffing something bad.
A visit from the ghost of SNL’s past
But it is definitely NOT a biographical account of what really happened, and should not be seen as such. This is largely a film for the fans, and other viewers will find it hit or miss and likely end up Googling said skits afterwards.
